CIRPOL

New circular business models based on the substitution of synthetic antioxidant additives for polyphenols obtained in a sustainable way from agri-food by-products

Grants for projects to promote the circular economy 2020

The project aims to replace food additives of chemical synthesis by polyphenols obtained using an innovative technology for the recovery of high value-added products (polyphenols) from by-products generated from the agri-food sector (grapes, olives, nuts and carob) promoting the circular economy.

Polyphenols are high-demand compounds of natural origin with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties and are currently obtained from virgin raw materials in the food chain, reducing their availability, while in the agri-food industry they are found in many by-products. (such as sansa, nuts or waste water).

Alternatively, a sustainable and versatile system is proposed for the extraction and recovery of polyphenols from by-products, while recovering water to be reused in the facility. Thus, CIRPOL transfers the concept of circular economy both to the sector itself (through the substitution of chemical agents or phytosanitary products) and intersectorally (offering secondary raw materials to sectors such as cosmetics), defining new business models and improving the economic and environmental sustainability of the sector.
