In light of the growing water crisis in Catalonia, and to continue efforts in this area, INNOVI has launched an operational group to analyze the feasibility of using reclaimed water for irrigating dryland vineyards. This initiative arises in response to the worrying levels of drought threatening viticulture in the region, especially in areas that depend on irrigation, such as Penedès.
The lack of rainfall and the decline in water reserves have forced the wine sector to seek innovative solutions to ensure long-term sustainability. Through the use of water treated at Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP), the project aims to find an alternative water source for vineyard irrigation, reducing pressure on reservoirs and aquifers.
Given the current situation and within the framework of the project, work is underway, among other things, on creating a report on the current state of woody crop irrigation using reclaimed water and the available technologies, as well as creating a reference document on the regulatory framework and governance models.
Ultimately, through this project, INNOVI not only aims to improve knowledge and resilience to drought within the sector, but also to offer a replicable approach for other agricultural regions in Catalonia and Europe
