On November 14th and 15th, the facilities of Juvé y Camps and Gramona in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia hosted the 1st Iberian Vineyard Pruning Congress, an event that brought together professionals and experts from the sector to reflect on the future of viticulture and the importance of pruning as a key tool for the sustainability of the industry.
Organized by the Pruning Academy of INNOVI, the congress featured participation from companies such as Viticultura Viva (Julián Palacios), viticulture departments from URV (Dr. Leonor Deis) and UPNA (Prof. Gonzaga Santesteban), Viñátigo wineries from Tenerife (Jorge Méndez), the ITACyL technology institute (Jesús Yuste), and pruning experts (SIMONIT&SIRCH). It also included the group that has shaped the Pruning Academy over the past 10 years, with Roc Gramona as its first director and Vicenç Canals as the current leader.
The event highlighted the work carried out in the region during these 10 years of the Pruning Academy's evolution and served as a platform for advancing improvements in the wine-growing sector. Additionally, it introduced the embryonic stage of the Pruning Agora, a new collaborative initiative that will bring together experts and scientists to foster the generation and transmission of knowledge and academic collaboration.
The Pruning Agora is envisioned as a cross-disciplinary platform on an Iberian scale —including Portugal and the Balearic and Canary Islands— to address challenges such as adapting vineyards to changing environmental conditions, new canopy designs, and green pruning techniques. This tool aims to provide long-term solutions to ensure productive viability and grape quality in the context of the climate crisis.
The congress, which gathered more than one hundred professionals, combined theoretical lectures with practical sessions and was praised by attendees as a milestone for the wine sector. It underscored the importance of shared knowledge in ensuring a sustainable future for viticulture that adapts to emerging environmental challenges.
